There is so much to do in Amsterdam, and my list only scratches the surface of what is possible in Amsterdam. That is why I’ve included a link to another website at the bottom of this page.

My Recommendations for Amsterdam

This is a list of places that I like to visit in Amsterdam, e.g., with my wife, and when we have friends visiting the country. It's my short list of must-see places. 

Rijksmuseum

Amsterdam Museum

The Amsterdam Museum is a captivating institution that unravels the rich tapestry of the city’s seven-century history. The museum is a journey through time, from its humble beginnings as a small settlement along the Amstel River to the peak of the Dutch Golden Age in the 17th century, and on to its current status as a bustling metropolis. Amsterdam Museum is located at Amstel 51, which houses three museums: the H’ART Museum (formerly known as Hermitage Amsterdam), Museum van de Geest, and Amsterdam Museum at the Amstel. The all-in ticket is currently only available through the H’ART Museum website and grants admission to the three museums.

National Maritime Museum

Museum Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder

The Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder Museum, also known as Our Lord in the Attic, is a hidden gem in the heart of Amsterdam, offering a unique and intriguing experience to the Dutch tolerance of religious freedom when the laws of those days dictated otherwise. (I bet this got your attention!) This museum, located at Oudezijds Voorburgwal 38, reveals a clandestine church, a historical testament to religious resilience. Exploring the hidden chambers of this former secret place of worship reveals a rich tapestry of history. The museum takes visitors to a bygone era when practicing one’s faith required discretion. A visit to Ons’ Lieve Heer op Solder is an off-the-beaten-path cultural adventure that offers a deeper understanding of Amsterdam’s diverse history.

Sint-Jozefkerk (De Papegaai)

Another previously hidden church is on one of Amsterdam’s busiest shopping streets. It is known as “De Papegaai” (The Parrot) because it was originally hidden in a garden behind a regular housefront that belonged to a bird trader during a time when Catholicism was not allowed to be practiced publicly. St. Joseph and a statue of a perched parrot flank the narrow Neo-Gothic facade today. The church, located on the busy Kalverstraat just south of Dam Square, welcomes visitors for peace and quiet while also celebrating Sunday Mass (Post-Vatican II Mass) in Latin with Gregorian chant.

Begijnhof

The Begijnhof, located in the heart of medieval Amsterdam, is a captivating historical landmark. Canal cruises

A canal cruise is a must-do during your visit to Amsterdam. The true beauty of Amsterdam’s canal houses can be seen from the water. In Amsterdam, there are numerous Canal Cruise companies. A boat tour can be booked for as little as 16 euros. There are also themed cruises available, such as a dinner cruise or a romantic candlelight cruise.
